Tell Your Pet's Rescue Story Here:
My Woody was a rescue from New Orleans, LA. He was picked up on the streets of New Orleans in November 2005; 2 1/2 months after hurricane Katrina. He was rescued by a Colorado organization - Pet Rescue, Colorado Effort. This organization was started by 2 vet techs at an office in Fort Collins, CO.
When Woody was picked up on the streets of New Orleans, he was 37 lbs - starving and suffering from heart worm. Woody was brought to Colorado along with 200 other orphaned pets.
They first began by getting some weight on him and getting him healthy. After sometime, they felt he was healthy enough to undergo heart worm treatment. His heart worm was so severe, he was expected to die from the treatment. But thankfully, he did not! He did however, suffer some scaring on his heart and lungs. I found Woody online on Petfinders.com in May of 2006 when he was healthy enough to be adopted. I had lost my previous black lab Sally, 5 years prior due to old age. It took me time to take the leap to another black lab. When I first adopted Woody, he came to me at a normal 78 lbs. He was healthy, but we had some work to do. I believe due to his time on the streets starving in New Orleans, he was lacking in manners and he was aggressive with his food. After constant work, we were able to get past those miner issues! When we adopted Woody, he was estimated to be about 3 years old. We had 7 wonderful years with him as he wasn't expected to last that long due to his heart worm issues.
One very important thing about 'My Woods" (my name for him) is that he hated water. I completely respected his hate for water because only those who have survived a hurricane of that magnitude can only truly understand what he experienced.
October 17, 2013, My Woods lost his battle to kidney issues. That really didn't surprise me due to what his body had endured in his life - almost starving to death and his heart worm (and probably close to drowning too). I miss him dearly on a daily basis.
I now have 5 dogs. All rescues! 3 from ARR! We have the geriatric ward - Pug - Samuel 19 and his buddy Black Lab/Corgy mix Whitey - 13 came as a pair in 12/2013; Dachshund Reba - 14 adopted 02/2013. The next 2 were not from ARR but other rescues - Chi/MinPin- Helton 7 adopted 4/2013 and MinPin Cocoa 7 adopted 06/2014. My Woods made me realize how important it is to rescue and give a safe home to those in need.
