Contest Rules

Choose one of the seven volunteer categories and tell us in 250 words or less why your nominee deserves to be recognized with a VOscar.

1. Youth Leadership - This award is given to an individual who is a Youth, a business lead by Youth, or an organization run by Youth whose efforts have empowered Youth to volunteer. These individuals or groups may have had an effect on infrastructure, creating new opportunities, or supporting youth volunteer endeavours financially or otherwise.

2. Female Leadership - This award is given to a Female leader who through their leadership skills and position has inspired, motivated and led others to affect our community through volunteerism.

3. Leadership in Innovation - This award is given to an individual, business, or organization whose innovative efforts have enabled others to volunteer. This individual may have had an effect on infrastructure, creating new opportunities, or supporting volunteer endeavours financially or otherwise.

4. Leadership in Diversity - This award is given to an individual, business, or organization that has successfully built an environment that supports a diverse, enthusiastic and engaged volunteer base.

5. Leadership in Corporate Responsibility - This award is given to an employer or business that has successfully supported volunteering among its employees as individuals or as a group.

6. Leadership in Collaboration - This award is given to a business or organization who has dedicated its volunteer endeavours on building collaborative efforts to expand volunteer opportunities.

7. Mayor’s Award for Volunteer Spirit - This award is given to an individual or team that best exemplifies a spirit of volunteering. 
 
 
VOScars Entry
You must submit a photo of the volunteer you are nominating and include:
  • Name of Volunteer, Business or Organization 
  • Their email address
  • Your Name
  • Your Email
  • A paragraph (250 words or less) that tells voters why this volunteer deserves to be honoured with a VOscar in the category they have been entered in.
Digital photos are recommended. Photos must be clear, of good quality and high resolution — 300 dpi or higher in TIFF or JPG format — and no greater than 5MB. Sorry, we cannot accept hard copies.

All submitted photos will be shared out on the Volunteer Ottawa pages on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram!

All entries must be photos of the nominee.

All entries must be a member of the Ottawa community.

All nominees will be contacted by Volunteer Ottawa for their permission and acceptance of the nomination prior to being approved on the website.

PUBLIC CHOICE Contest & Voting Fees
Each entry is free.

The Submissions Period for all VOscar categories starts on February 24, 2016 at  9:00 AM ET and ends on April 22, 2016 at 9:00 AM ET.

The Voting Period for the Public Choice Award starts on February 24, 2016 at 9:00 AM ET and ends on April 22, 2016 at 9:00 AM ET.

Each $1 donation counts as one (1) vote and is applied to the Public Choice Award ONLY.

All other VOscar winners are determined by a panel of adjudicators, based on the nominee's impact on the Ottawa community and volunteerism. 



We encourage you to e-mail the contest link to family and friends and encourage them to vote for your favorite contestant's photo. Votes may be cast during the Voting Period only. All donations for votes are non-refundable and not tax deductible (there was a vote in exchange for the donation). Entries and donations must be made via the online contest page. Donations and photo entries for this online contest that are submitted via other means (snail mail, in-person or main website donation page) will be accepted as donations but not applied toward the contest. Contest payments online are through a secure site.


VOSCAR PUBLIC CHOICE AWARDS
The Public Choice VOscar Award will be determined by the top vote-getter in each category and will be notified via telephone or email on or about April 25, 2016. If the nominees cannot be contacted within five (5) days after the date of the first attempt to contact him/her, Volunteer Ottawa may select an alternate nominee in his/her place from the next eligible top vote-getter for the Public Choice Award. The top three Public Choice nominees in each category will be invited to attend the VOscars held on April 28, 2016, where the Public Choice recipient in each category will be announced.

Note: public voting will ONLY be used to determine the Public Choice Award winner.

All other VOscar winners are determined by a panel of adjudicators, based on the nominee's impact on the Ottawa community and volunteerism.

VOSCAR CATEGORY AWARD RECIPIENT
The VOscar recipients in each category will be determined by a panel of adjudicators and will be based on the nominees impact on the Ottawa community and volunteerism. They will be notified via telephone or email on or about April 25, 2016. If the nominees cannot be contacted within five (5) days after the date of the first attempt to contact him/her, Volunteer Ottawa may select an alternate nominee in his/her place. The top three nominees in each category will be invited to attend the VOscars held on April 28, 2016, where the recipient in each category will be announced.

Note: public voting will ONLY be used to determine the Public Choice Award winner.

All other VOscar winners are determined by a panel of adjudicators, based on the nominee's impact on the Ottawa community and volunteerism.

AWARD NOTIFICATION
The potential winners will be notified by email or phone. Potential winners must continue to comply with all terms and conditions of these Official Rules, and winning is contingent upon fulfilling all requirements. In the event that a potential winner is disqualified for any reason, Volunteer Ottawa will award the applicable prize to an alternate winner among remaining eligible entries.

AWARDS
The top three nominees in each category and the top three Public Choice nominees in each category will be invited to attend the VOscars held on April 28, 2016, where the winner in each category will be announced.

Note: public voting will ONLY be used to determine the Public Choice Award winner.

All other VOscar winners are determined by a panel of adjudicators, based on the nominee's impact on the Ottawa community and volunteerism.

MISCELLANEOUS
Volunteer Ottawa reserves the right to modify or clarify any of the contest rules during the term of the contest without advance notice.

Volunteer Ottawa reserves the right to use any photos submitted for marketing purposes.
