Short story about how the animal has changed the owner's life for the better
When our youngest left for college, the house suddenly felt so quiet. Just six months earlier, we had lost our beloved Pekingese, and I was certain I could never open my heart to another dog again.
One weekend, my daughter came home from college and asked if we could visit the APCSM. I agreed reluctantly, still convinced we weren’t ready for another dog.
As we walked into the adoption room, every dog was barking and wagging their tails — except one. Enzo was curled up in the corner of his kennel, trembling quietly. We took him for a walk, and although he was so nervous, he kept looking up at me with eyes that seemed to say, “Please take me home.”
Of course, he came home with us that day.
At first, Enzo was shy, anxious, and clearly in need of love and patience. But before long, we realized something beautiful — we needed him just as much as he needed us. A week after coming home, he gave us his first smile, and little by little he filled our home with laughter, comfort, and joy again. He will forever be my soul dog.
