My Story
Rayna formerly Shooga was adopted from Animal Control in 2017.
Rayna's story began when a couple decided they wanted to breed their male with a friend's female (Shooga). Their idea became reality & they housed Shooga while she was pregnant. Once she gave birth to 9 puppies the couple got in a domestic dispute. The woman left with her children & did not return. Neighbors filed a report with animal control because the man was not feeding or watering the male dog, Shooga or the puppies. After 2 weeks the officers were finally able to make contact with the man and he surrendered Shooga & her puppies. Their condition was appalling. They were so emaciated that it took a week before they could successfully keep food down.
Rayna (shooga) was under a year old at the time of her surrender. She was just a baby herself when she was bred & left for dead. A young & confused mother just trying to do the best she could in a gruesome situation. The officers still talk about what a great mother she was even though they were all dying of starvation.
I met her a week after she arrived at animal control while volunteering. Her puppies all found homes but she was left waiting. I took her out for walks but she had no real interest in walking. All she wanted was love. I would stop, sit down, and be smothered in kisses. I wondered to myself, "How can she still love people?!". She is a true example of how resilient & forgiving dog's really are. Humans failed her on an epic scale.
I sponsored her because I thought it would help her find a home and obviously animal control is a kill shelter and she was on the list. The manager is AMAZING and he does all he can do to ensure no dog is put down... that being said; it's inevitable when intake outweighs adoptions.
Full sponsorship, wonderful demeanor, and yet no-one wanted her. Why? Probably because she was a skinny female pitbull who had sores on her paws & body. She cried all night every night in her kennel bc she suffered from post partum depression but the only people who knew that were the officers.
After 2 months I knew her time was running out and that is when she & the number 1 on the list (Boy) came home with me.
She didn't have confidence, had no idea how to be a dog, and wouldn't walk anywhere without me leading. She was unsure about EVERYTHING. With alot of love and patience she has blossomed into the Queen I knew she could be. She is sassy, adventurous, and as outgoing as they come.
Rayna's days of starvation & motherhood are over forever. She now enjoys rabbit & lizard hunting, suntanning, jeeping and couch surfing.
