Carolina Great Pyrenees Rescue (CGPR) is a 501c(3) non-profit based out of the Charlotte, NC metro area that works to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome displaced, abandoned, neglected and abused Great Pyrenees in North and South Carolina.
CGPR was established in 1992 in Winston-Salem, NC by Martha Rehmeyer. We moved to our current location in Indian Trail, NC in 2016 when Martha retired, and Shannon Meehan assumed the presidency.
Our volunteer-based organization advocates for the breed and educates others about the proper care and training of these "gentle giants," and we serve as a resource for Pyr owners throughout the region whether or not they adopted through CGPR. We sponsor social events and maintain an on-line presence that enables Pyr people to meet and communicate with one another because we believe that celebrating the wonderful dogs who share our lives is an important part of rescue and the best advertisement for what we do.
We rescue over 100 Pyrs per year, but that doesn't meet the demand in our two states. In 2021, we were asked to help over 500 Pyrs and Pyr mixes in North and South Carolina. Many dogs we take in require veterinary care and TLC to be ready for adoption, and we readily take on broken bones, thin coats, infected ears, and all the other symptoms of neglect or abuse. We prioritize the worst cases, the dogs who wouldn't have a chance at the shelter. Those are the Pyrs who need us the most. Food, shelter, and sometimes surgery and medicine can turn even the bleakest cases into happy endings. Your support helps us grow to help more Pyrs.
