The Salk Institute is a tranquil space looking over the Pacific Ocean in beautiful La Jolla, CA. It was designed by architect Louis I. Khan as a biomedical research center. I wanted to photograph this location for several years and finally had the opportunity to be there on a weekday when the institute is open to visitors. I tried several compositions before setting up my camera right above the small fountain. The scene felt stark and empty so I waited for someone to walk through to add the human element to the photograph.
