About Us
We are an all-volunteer, registered 501c3 non-profit (hey, that means your donations are tax deductible!). Friends of Cumberland County Animal Shelter was started by Leigh McCrea in 2013. Leigh noticed a need at her local animal shelter for visibility for pound puppies and kitties, and so started posting them on Facebook. Before Leigh started Friends of Cumberland County, the kill rate at the county's animal shelter exceeded 52%. For a small rural pound with virtually no budget, this is an astoundingly low rate. As of 2015, that number has dropped below 5%. Leigh and her volunteers make sure that animals have clean blankets, sturdy non-slip collars, and as much healthcare as Friends of Cumberland County Animal Control can afford.
