I adopted Max in October 2022. I had recently lost both my dogs of 14 years. When I learned Max was slated for euthanasia in a facility in Nogales, I immediately agreed to adopt him.

Six-month-old Max had starved on the streets and was terribly thin. His head looked way too big for his body, and he was quite wild. He pawed through every garbage can in the house looking for scraps until we finally bought some cans with lids. We worked with a trainer for a few months and he very quickly learned 20 commands. The trainer commented that he was one of the smartest dogs she’s ever trained.

He has brought joy back into the house after I was without dogs for 6 months. He is a constant source of love, amusement, amazement, and stress! I spend half my day trying to keep him alive. Everything goes into the mouth including, once, an open safety pin. His most memorable antic was eating a tube of my red artist paint and smearing it all over the white carpet in my bedroom. When I first came upon the scene I panicked, thinking he was bleeding out. He was quite sick for a while (with unbelievable red droppings in the backyard) and we had to replace the wall-to-wall carpet. Since he survived the incident, we can laugh about it, but there is now a baby gate that keeps him out of my studio when we are not painting.

Everywhere I take him, people want to pet him. He is a showstopper! At home, he loves to swim in the pool and has rescued several small animals that have fallen in. He is an incredible, adorable being with a huge personality.
