My name is Cooper, and while I don’t pull hoses or climb ladders, I carry a different kind of weight for the Los Angeles Fire Department. As a Critical Incident Stress K9, I specialize in the 'after.' After the sirens stop, after the smoke clears, and after our firefighters have seen things no one should have to see.

As a Critical Incident Stress K9, my main job is to bring joy and comfort to my Fire family and the wonderful residents of Los Angeles. It's not just a job for me, it’s a mission to support those who go above and beyond for our community every single day. Last year, during the intensity of the Palisades Wildfire, I saw firsthand how a wagging tail can be more effective than a debrief. I remember a firefighter who had been on the line for 36 hours, he didn’t need words, he just needed to bury his hands in my fur and breathe. In that moment, the stress didn't just fade it transformed into resilience. My commitment to being there during critical situations requires training, discipline, and resilience. And with the support of my handler Captain Roman Sanchez, I’ve learned how to be a source of strength and joy for others. I believe that heroism comes in many forms, not just in heroic acts during emergencies, but also in the quiet moments of support we offer each other. I strive to inspire those around me to embrace hope and resilience. I’m not just a mascot, I’m a partner in mental health, a furry reminder to our city’s bravest that they never have to carry the burden alone. I don’t wear a cape, but I do wear a badge of comfort, and I’d be honored to be your Howling Hero."
