What is your dog's breed and age?
Australian Cattle Dog, 9 years old
How has your dog impacted your life or the lives of others?
Doc arrived at PACC over three years ago after being abandoned. He was severely emaciated and sight impaired and he instantly captured my heart as a volunteer. Adopted after several weeks, he was returned to PACC when the family no longer wanted him. Several months later he was adopted again only to be discarded and found by an officer. His deteriorated condition was devastating - particularly because his untreated Valley Fever resulted in the removal of his eyes.
Doc became depressed while recovering in the shelter so with support from a caring rescue group we were able to secure a foster home. Sadly, this was short-lived when his foster mom became ill. I was heartbroken – this courageous boy had now been deserted four times and he deserved better than this. And it was then that my husband pointed out the obvious to me - the perfect home for Doc was with us all along.
Doc has faced neglect, heartbreak and uncertainty but remains trusting, loving and joyful. He still receives ongoing treatment for Valley Fever and struggles with Inflammatory Bowel Disease from his years of living on the streets, but he's resilient and incredibly smart - he takes the lead on walks and eagerly greets neighbors; he knows exactly where all his toys and snacks are located; and he's especially good at finding the back of our legs to nudge us where he wants us to go. We adore him and he has taught us that in a life full of unkindness and hopelessness, optimism and love can prevail.
