Sugaree lost her vision in late 2023, but never her spirit. Strong-willed and full of love, she came into our lives just when we needed her most.

In December, while grieving the loss of an aging dog, I spotted Sugaree (then known as Billie Jean) on the Humane Colorado website. I checked daily—but she disappeared before Christmas. I thought it wasn’t meant to be. Then, the day after Christmas, she reappeared.

Around that time, a longtime client told me she’d adopted but returned a dog—she said the dog was blind and needed more than she could give. When I asked if it was Billie Jean, she gasped. It was.

When my family arrived at the shelter, Sugaree was moments from going home with someone else. But after one final check, they said, “She’s available.”

We didn’t hesitate. Sugaree came home that day. She may not see with her eyes, but she sees with her heart—and that’s never let her
