Your Pet's Story or BioZOLA, KENYA ORPHAN RESCUE KITTY
Orphaned in Kenya and on her own at 4 weeks, Zola was found and cared for in Nairobi by part-time Maui residents and Maui Humane Society supporters Pam and Charlie Northrip. She was the last surviving kitten from a feral Mom cat they had been feeding. They found that the Mom had died so they lured Zola out of the bushes and took her to their apartment, where she learned to use the litter box, and fetch. Cat posts and “habitats” are rare in Kenya, so the Northrips had one made by a local carpenter, who had never seen one. Zola is pictured sitting on it.
Northrip grandsons Daniel and Roman fell in love with Zola while visiting Charlie and Pam. She made the flight back to Washington, DC with the boys and now makes her home with the Northrip/McDonough family in Washington, DC.
The gate guard at the Northrip’s apartment complex had helped in Zola’s initial “capture.” After the boys left for home, the guard stopped Pam and asked, “Is it true that the cat has gone to America?” It’s a trip he and others in Kenya might envy.
