Celebrating Yesterday, Bettering Tomorrow
As we look back on our incredible 135-year history, we are reminded of just how important a role the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society has played in our community.
Founded in 1887, MHHS was at the forefront of protecting the most vulnerable members of our community – orphaned, neglected, and abused children.
MHHS soon expanded its charter to protect animals and continued to serve both until 1957. At that point, our focus shifted to entirely animals and the
crushing pet overpopulation crisis so prevalent during that time. Our extraordinary history has been marked by forward-thinking leaders with a vision for a more humane community for all of its members. How we wish those who began this journey could see how we have carried their hopes and dreams forward.
As an organization funded by donations, it is only through the generous support of caring donors like you that
we are able to provide care and healing for so many deserving animals.

Here are some of our 2021 milestones:
- 2,174 pets found loving homes.
- 218 pets were removed from abusive or neglectful situations.
- Over 400 pets received specialized care and training from our Behavior and Enrichment team to build confidence, improve manners and increase adoptability.
- Foster volunteers provided extra care and TLC for 639 pets.
To help keep pets in homes where they are loved:- We distributed over 81,000 pet meals through our Furry Friends Pet Food Pantry.
- We provided 1,526 spay and neuter surgeries and 674 wellness visits for the public through our low-cost clinic.
- Our Behavior and Enrichment Helpline connected dozens of families with the expertise of our staff for help with training and behavior issues.
