NICU Hospital for my journeyMedical University of South Carolina
My NICU Graduate's JourneyQuinn was an emergency c-section at 35 weeks for decreased fetal movement. She was affected by a severe fetal-maternal bleed. At her time of birth her HCT was around 15 with a rising lactate level of 19. We were told she was the sickest baby in the NICU and they didn’t know if she would survive the first 2 hours. She fought really hard on cpap for 15 hours before requiring intubation and mechanical ventilation. She received multiple blood transfusions and was placed on nitric oxide. Every major organ was damaged due to hypoxia. Her brain MRI revealed suspected HIE with bilateral parietal bleeds and an ischemic temporal infarct. However, our little warrior was very resilient and came off the ventilator in 3 days! Over an 18 day NICU stay Quinn serious health issues including: TTN, PDA, neonatal hemorrhage, lactic acidosis, hypoxic respiratory failure, hypovolemic shock, pulmonary hypertension, AKI, PVI, electrolyte abnormalities, and seizure-like activity. Throughout it all she fought to make it home to her family. Quinn endured more in her first 18 days of life than most will in an entire lifetime. We are forever grateful for the amazing care provided to save our little girl’s life!
What makes you proud of you NICU graduate?Quinn is thriving! She works really hard every week in PT to overcome delays in motor development. She will soon be starting OT to work on fine motor skills. When she smiles her whole face lights up and you can tell she is truly happy. She brings joy to anyone she meets! She will not let her difficult birth story dictate her future. We can’t wait to see how her journey unfolds. #Quinn’sJourney
