My NICU Graduate's Journey
Callan was born at Children’s Mercy Hospital with Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome. He had one heart procedure and then developed Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC). He had to have half of his large intestine removed and lived with an ostomy bag for 5 months. Callan became septic from NEC and nearly died. He spent 95 days in the NICU, has had 4 major surgeries, been intubated 7 times, and had a feeding tube until he was 2 years old (and a couple months).

What makes you proud of you NICU graduate?
Callan was a warrior in the NICU and has that same tenacity for life now at 2.5 years old. He has had a ton of challenges — lots of procedures, echocardiograms, PT, OT, GI appointments, and more — but it never slows him down. He is so brave, so lively, and such a miracle. He always has the biggest smile on his face and tackles life with full force.
