Last January, when ingenuity & serendipity collided, I found a friend I hadn’t see in 4 decades. Arriving at the home of Devora & her husband Tom, I experienced the phenomena that old friends sometimes encounter- where 40+ years of absence collapse into seeming like about a week. Once again, we were 25! On my way back to Sonoma County after an unbelievably special weekend with my old friend, at her request, I stopped in at 9-Lives cat shelter where Devora volunteers. I love cats, although that day I had no intention of adoption. I wandered in and out of different cages, with about 100 cats. Suddenly I saw a bonded pair of brothers. Beautiful grey tabbies with lots of white and blonde markings- these guys stood out. Sadly, they also stood out because they had been abandoned twice & lived in the shelter for 5 of their 9 months. One (Zig Zag) was shy but friendly…but his much smaller brother (Tule) would do nothing but hiss. Everything changed for me in that instant!
One night, that first week in our bathroom, I found fresh blood. Tule had a ruptured abscess! He nailed me when I cornered & grabbed him so we could get him to the ER. The next day, he ripped out the drain. Then he developed a respiratory infection. He struggled & so did I. My life had become all about the taming & care of these cats.
I spent 3 months in a chair in our bedroom reading, playing & singing to them as well as offering treats. After 5 months in the house, we finally let them outside. (Gulp) We are surrounded by acres of vineyards & horses. Our place is landscaped with shrubs to hide under & hunt. They have access to the house through an open window, and come in & out all day. They hit us up for treats or petting or just to be near us now. We adore these wonderful little souls and are so grateful they are finally happy and "home".
