Berkeley, Buffy, and Lil Bit became a family in the fall of 2024. Berkeley, adopted years earlier from Oakland Animal Services, was my steady companion through life’s hardest chapters. She recently passed at the remarkable age of 17, but not before teaching her sisters how to be ‘good dogs’ with her patience, loyalty, and love.

Buffy and Lil Bit, both proud NMDR alumni, brought fresh joy and playfulness into the home. Berkeley welcomed them with the wisdom only an elder pug could offer, showing them the comfort of family and the safety of love.

Today, Buffy and Lil Bit carry her lessons forward — thriving as beloved companions and living proof of the second chances NMDR makes possible. Their story is one of rescue, resilience, and family, with Berkeley’s spirit still guiding them every time they curl up together on the couch.
