Story
First of all, the residents did not like it one bit when I told them we were going to do ANYTHING to alter the rocking chair from its original state. I had to convince them that it would be first of all, fun to do, and that the chair really would look pretty once we were finished with it, and if we ended up selling the chair, the money would go to a good cause.
The idea of the best way to decorate the chair sort of evolved. Initially we discussed doing decoupage with old hymnal pages and layering other images on top, like birds and flowers. Then we got the idea to paint it first and then decoupage areas of the chair. We found out we could paint it using an old lace table cloth as a “stencil”. Once residents got started and saw how beautiful it was turning out using the tablecloth stencil, they decided they wanted to do the entire chair that way.
Another thing is the residents decided that they loved their chair and wanted to keep it rather than sell it. This project brought a lot of excitement and joy to everyone who worked on it. There has been discussion about possibly painting and stenciling other pieces of furniture in the future.
