About

Save A Dog A Day is an all volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing animals in shelters that are in imminent danger of being euthanized and finding them safe and permanent homes.

Save A Dog A Day started in December 2007 when I became aware of some websites that addressed the disturbing realities that concern animal shelter issues. I learned for instance, that over four million innocent and healthy animals are killed each year in U.S. shelters, according to statistics from the ASPCA and the Humane Society of the United States. Other than lethal injection, which is the most humane method used, most shelters continue to gas or use a heart stick (very painful and illegal) to kill the animals. Part of our challenge is to eradicate these cruel practices, while still maintaining a working relationship with these shelters. Using the internet, I began to advertise dogs that were within days of being euthanized, trying to find people willing to either temporarily foster or better, who were interested in adopting them. I quickly teamed up with likeminded individuals and started rescuing dogs with the goal of saving at least a dog a day. We became an official 501(c)(3) tax deductible charity in July of 2009.

Save A Dog A Day's national operations are made possible by a network of uncompensated volunteers throughout the United States who donate their time, energy, money, and homes to this cause. Volunteers spend endless hours rescuing at-risk dogs and aiding in their removal from shelters. They also advertise dogs on the internet and in local papers; put up posters in their local communities; help to transport dogs to foster homes, other no-kill animal rescues and to permanent homes.
