Dedicated to the San Diego County community since 1960, Rancho Coastal Humane Society (RCHS) was founded by animal lover Maria K. Lloyd who purchased property off a small dirt road in Encinitas, California. Today, that dirt road is I-5, but the shelter still resides in the small yellow house where it all started.
RCHS provides care and comfort to homeless dogs, cats and rabbits awaiting a "fur-ever" family. Most of our animals come from other rescue organizations through the
FOCAS (Friends of County Animal Shelters) transport program. RCHS helps relieve shelter overcrowding and responds during times of crisis.
At RCHS the focus is on strengthening the human-animal bond through programs and services that serve the community and adhere to our mission. This includes:
- Animal Safehouse Program (ASP) – Temporary emergency boarding and support for the pets of domestic violence victims, military veterans and seniors.
- Community Pet Food Banks - Pet food and supplies for pet owners in need.
- Foster Program – Foster volunteers help us care for more animals than shelter space allows.
- Humane Education – Animal Camps and Kids Community Service programs for children and teens.
- Pet Assisted Therapy – Offers the special healing only an animal can provide.
- Pet Loss Support Program – Assistance for those grieving the loss of a beloved pet.
- Volunteer Program – A hands-on way for animal lovers to get involved and make a difference.
- RCHS Thrift Shop – Donate for a good cause or shop for a great deal.
