Pet's Story or Bio
JoeBuck (his new name) was arrested late one evening by the Wasco Police Dept. as a rambunctious stray. The next day the Police called the Fresno SPCA and said they had a 50 pound Rottweiler puppy that was growling at and trying to bite all the officers that came near him, and wanted to take him outback and shoot him. Fortunately, the SPCA said they would have someone there by the end of the day.
He was then rescued by a lady with GEPDA (Group Education to Protect and Defend Animals), who was able to get in the cell with him, and then fostered with a family in Scotts Valley. We saw his picture on Pet Finders, and went to meet him. He stayed close to the foster lady, and when I went to him and extended my fist for JoeBuck to smell, the dog cowered back. At that time I was sure he had been abused. The foster lady said if you ever go out of town, or need to leave him for a day, please give me a call, "I love that dog."
We brought him home and he was constantly by my wife's side, but shied away from me. I would lay on the floor with treats on me to lure the dog to me, and after a week succeeded! Then I said, "Do you want to go for a walk?" JoeBuck bounded to the door, and when he saw a leather leash he cringed in fear and ran away to the other side of the house, leading me to believe he had also been hit by a belt or? Next, two more weeks on the floor with treats on me. This time when he came to me and I used a chain link leash. Victory at last. That's when his name got changed to JoeBuck, and I started to train him. He now runs down the driveway to fetch my newspaper daily, as well as many other desired behaviors.
We had occasion to go out to dinner in Santa Cruz one night, called the foster lady, and agreed to drop him at their house for a few hours. We arrived, took JoeBuck in, let go off the leash, and next heard the husband yell out, "What did you do to this dog? In the two months we had him, he would never come to me, and now he wants to be my friend!"
It is such a great feeling to have worked through his fears and have such a loving and obedient companion. JoeBuck is the best!
