Pet personality / Story of adoption / Why is your pet special?Meet Noah. Like all bison, Noah is smart, adaptable, resilient, amazing and wonderful a truly extraordinary animal. She can be seen with her fellow Bison friends near Butler Lake, Frontier County line and the Red Willow County line in southwest Nebraska.
Bison have lived in southwest, Nebraska roaming the prairie for a very long time, in fact, long before people inhabited the area. And when human beings did arrive on the plains to interact with the bison, they were native Americans. Native Americans had an enormous respect for the Bison and a spiritual relationship with them. Some said their entire world was intricately woven and laced with the bison and their enormous herds.
Historians report at one time over 30-40 million or more Bison roamed North America but were slaughtered and almost extinct because of humans greed and blatant disregard for the animal and native Americans. It would have been a tragedy to lose these magnificent animals.
Fortunately a few preservationists and visionaries prevented the total eradication of the bison from occurring. It is reported that the final remaining herds were as low as 2500 head before new laws prevented poaching and hunting of the American bison.
The Cat Pack and McCook Humane Society are very proud and excited to include a bison photo in our 2018 calendar. And this is possible because of visionary leader and investor Darrell Miester (Hawaii resident) who is nurturing and growing a herd in southwest Nebraska in reverence to their storied history and unique place on this part of mother earth.
In our opinion, "McCook, the Capital of the Buffalo Commons," is a far more powerful and accurate brand statement because when you visit the area today because of Darrell, you can actually see living warm blooded bison roaming in their natural habitat.
Today, the bison industry is staging a growth trend back with enormous interest and commitment across America. In fact, in 2016, the Bison was officially named the "National Mammal" along side the American Eagle recognizing these amazing animals and what they represent to the United States of America.
Thank you Darrell Miester for sharing your vision with others, and this photo of Noah, named for a legendary visionary, leader and prophet in the Old Testament.
