The very first day Neyya came home to join our family, she greeted my then 5 year old son, MJ, with a wide grin. She leaned her entire body on his little frame and whispered something into his ear. It was the first of their many super-top-secret secrets. One of them being Neyya can talk! Actually she is a non stop chatterbox offering up unsolicited commentary on everything, especially her favorite topic... food. MJ who struggled with speech delays soon discovered that he could say anything around Neyya. That is if he could get a word in edgewise. He could always count on her to laugh at his made up jokes. They raced each other on long, summer hikes and bickered about who won on the drive home. They held top secret meetings to plot and scheme. Somehow they managed to get away with most of their mischiefs. Now, five years later, they are still thick as thieves. They laugh knowingly as they pour over stacks of Calvin and Hobbes comic books. In honor of their favorite comic characters, I like to think that when they first met, Neyya whispered, "Things are never quite as scary when you've got a best friend." But I guess I will never know. It will always be their secret.
