Hero's rescuers had watched him for a few days, scavenging and then carrying food away rather than scarfing it down, though he was skinny. He was wily, but they finally tracked him to an abandoned shed where he was living with his girlfriend and two tiny puppies, and realized he was bringing the food back for them. They said, "He's a Hero!" and that's how he got his name.
