Your Rescue Story
Like many people, I work quite a bit at a job I tend to take home when I shouldn't and spend most evenings by myself. When life was really getting to me, my partner (Zach) took notice and started to not so subtly looking at animal rescue groups and humane societies in hopes of finding the purrfect someone to keep me company and to enjoy life with.

We spotted Harold (Syrup) on the CA Humane website in January 2023. He was described as a shy boy in need of some friendly humans to help him grow. We were throwing around a couple of names just to see what would sound right and Zach landed on Harold. Have you ever experienced the moment where something has been named perfectly? That was this moment for us.

In typical me fashion, I decided we couldn't house an animal. I came up with all these reasons that really didn't matter, but I thought they did. Most of these reasons stemming from the worry that Harold would not like us, or we would some how mess up his entire life. Harold was a nice window of what could be. Each week went by and each week I checked in to see if Harold had been adopted. As each week went, Harold stayed where he was.

Zach's parents went to visit CA Humane one day in March and met Harold. They spoke to some of the workers there, who explained that Harold did not get much attention because he stayed at the tippy top of his space, far away from the humans. I did not know this was going on until I came home that night and saw a couple of pictures and heard his story.

If, like me, you tear up at the slightest sight of something sad or cute then you will understand when I say I cried like a baby. I contacted CA Humane the next day to set up a meet and greet.

We met Harold on April 11 and took him home that same day. When we met him, he mostly hid behind a microwave and wanted absolutely nothing to do with us. But that was okay because we had already decided that regardless of how the meet and greet went, we were bringing him home.

Harold is no longer a shy guy. He is very chatty, has the all-day zoomies, and wants to be near us most of the time. I believe him to be a pretty happy boy. I am so happy that we were able to give him a home but I am selfishly happier that he gives me a purpose that is not at all related to external things. I would go so far as to say he even likes us. I've become that person who never stops talking about what their animal did and I have too many pictures to share. Life is a bit happier with Harold and I am very thankful for him and his spunky heart. I would be positively miserable without him.
