Your Rescue Story
My wife and I had made a trip to Red Deer one day from our home in Rimbey, I remember it was a Saturday. We had no specific reason for going so I was surprised when she said let’s go to CA Humane and look at dogs to adopt. I was shocked, I had been wanting to adopt a dog for along time. I suffer from PTSD and Depression and I felt having a dog would help me dealing with it. I was also awaiting replacement of both my knee’s. We had decided that we would wait until after my knee’s were done so to be looking for a dog at this point was very shocking to me.

When we arrived we told the staff that we were there to look for a dog to adopt. We let them know we did not want a puppy nor did we want a big dog. So a young lady starts taking us around looking at some of the dogs and we met a couple of them personally but nothing was giving me that special feeling I knew I needed. We kept passing a very small room with a little window in the door, and I could see that there was a dog in the room. I asked the gal “what about this one” and she said no that wasn’t a good idea. That just made me want to meet this dog Randy even more. Apparently Randy had some issues, extreme anxiety, very scared all the time and needed daily medication to help with controlling his anxiety issues. Randy had been at the Humane Society in Red Deer for 14 months.

We persisted until we were allowed to go into the room with Randy, my wife went in with the young lady and, I waited outside the room but I could see them at all times. Randy was just shaking uncontrollably and he was barking and whining constantly. Finally I went into the room and got down on my hands and brace covered knee’s. I crawled right up to him and started scratching his neck and his chest. His shaking subsided remarkably, not completely but to a point that I knew we had made a connection. A day and a half later we went back to bring him to his furever home! It is truly amazing the transformation he has made in the three months since he joined our family. He now runs around our yard at 100 miles an hour, we take him to the off leash dog park in Sylvan Lake and he loves being there out with the other dogs. I knew from the first day we saw him that he just needed a chance. Everyday is an adventure now for him. Findlay and I just spent a night in our motor home on our driveway so I could get him used to it before camping season. He loves to go on walks around the Town’s trail system or along Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake on the weekend. We took him for a bath at Pet Smart in Sylvan and while the first few minutes had us questioning if he really needed a bath in the first place, he soon settled right in and enjoyed it . The day we brought him home we took him to our veterinarian and he took him off the medication he was receiving for his anxiety and he replaced it with CBD oil and it has made him a brand new dog. Finlay with out even knowing it has helped me with my battle with PTSD and depression. He makes me smile and his constantly wagging tail tells me that he is truly happy being in his new home. I don’t know why Randy wasn’t adopted sooner but I thank God every day that he was still available when we stopped in and met him three months ago. He will now live a comfortable life, never wanting for anything as Finlay Sheamus Clark.
