Water point sustainability studies show that 20% of new water points becomes disgunctional with just two years of construction. Causes of non-functionality include poor siting, poor construction, lack of funds for operation and maintenance and receding water tables.

CARE Interiin Zambia is implementing an integrated nutrition, agriculture, health and water and sanitation project with funding CAG Canada . The project is supporting addressing the problems of malnutrition and stunting.

CARE is working with government sector departments in Kanchibiya district to do , among other things, strengthen the supply chain for water point management. CARE has helped the local municipal council roll out the national WASH operations and maintenance strategy, trained area pump menders and Caretakers, trained water and sanitation committees in WASH management, trained traditional chiefs in community development, procured tool kits for water point management and helped WASH committes establish a community driven user fees generation mechanism to raise funds for water point operations and maintenance.

In the picture, the CARE Zambi WASH Manager and the Kanchibiya district council WASH coordinator were part of the team working the local twined pump menders rehabilitating a non-functional borehole at Mpepo Village. The reputed boreholes helped 300 people in the village access safe water, it enabled mothers in the village access safe water for nutritious food preparation.
