Lake Charles Pit Bull Rescue opened in 2009 as a breed-specific rescue in the Southwest Louisiana (SWLA) region. It became apparent that the need in the community reached far beyond "pit bull" type dogs, so the rescue soon began taking in dogs of all breeds as space and funds became available. Cases of animal cruelty, strays, and emergency medical situations as well as dogs retained by Calcasieu Animal Services have regularly become part of the Lake Charles Pit Bull Rescue pack. The goal for each dog has been to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome into a lasting and loving home. Over a hundred dogs have found their way in and out of the rescue in the past year alone.
These past two years have become a turning point for the rescue. The volunteer staff has expanded, programs are growing, and the need for a facility has become more urgent. The need in the SWLA region for rescue is dire. Inquiries are fielded daily regarding strays, potential abuse cases, animal surrenders, and pleas for help. With a limited number of fosters and small budget, it is heartbreaking the number of dogs in need that have to be turned away. We work to a change this through a number of programs we have in place: Foster/Adoption, Education, Veteran Service Dogs, and Transport to other areas of the country. We also work to assist in local humanitarian efforts to give back to our community.
