About Us

Founded in 1976 by a dedicated group of women who refused to let town animals be euthanized due to lack of shelter or animal control, East Greenwich Animal Protection League – Heart of RI, has evolved into one of Rhode Island's premier rescue organizations. Our journey began with a special fundraising event to kickstart our rescue efforts, and since then, we have been committed to helping pets in need.

In 1978, we officially incorporated and received 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Our early years saw us housing animals at Greenwich Bay Animal Hospital, our valuable partner in caring for the town's strays. Over time, our organization expanded, adding staff and addressing the increasing demand for pets in Rhode Island.

In 2004, we started rescuing dogs from the South to meet the growing need and reduce euthanasia rates. Transporting these animals led to increased adoptions and raised our profile in the community.

In 2013, we relocated to East Greenwich Animal Hospital to accommodate our growing operations. However, when the hospital closed, we faced uncertainty. Determined to continue our mission, we explored various locations until a building in Cranston caught our eye. Through the generosity of Dr. Andrew Martin and other supporters, we secured the building and opened our doors in 2018.

We are dedicated to finding forever homes for companion animals, offering community relinquishment services, and expanding into a full-service shelter. With ongoing fundraising efforts and support from donors and volunteers, we are striving to complete our facility renovations and realize our vision for the future.

Under the leadership of Executive Director Tammy Gallo, we remain steadfast in our commitment to animal welfare and look forward to continuing our work in the years to come.
