Your Pet's Rescue Story
Duke, previously known as Luke was actually rescued from the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando in February of 2016. We drove 45 minutes to adopt our first family dog and it was time well spent. Upon adopting Duke, we learned he suffered from SEVERE separation anxiety, was a counter surfer, and could escape from crates. We worked for months and months to break Duke of his issues, various training exercises and many barricades upon leaving the house, but he didn't seem to respond to anything we were trying. Sadly, Duke did push his Mommy to her breaking point after thousands of dollars worth of damage to our new home and daily messes of chewed toys and knocked over end tables. Dukes mommy called the shelter and was informed that he would be put down if he was returned and this made Duke's mommy very upset. So we sat down and had a heart to heart. See, what we didn't tell you was that when we brought Duke home, he came home to our 3 week old son. From the moment duke sniffed him they were best buds! So when I was telling Duke that he needed to try really hard to be the best version of himself I also let him know that if he couldn't do this that him and his best friend (my son) would never see each other again. Duke immediately ran to my son's bedroom door, where he was napping on the other side and laid down. From that moment on Duke understood. It was like someone flipped a switch in his head. Now my son, a year and a half old, still has his best bud and I am so thankful. On that night of our heart to heart Duke started going into my son's room with me to tuck him in. To this day Duke has never missed a night. Duke and Brantley are 2 peas in a pod and I can't ever imagine our lives without Duke. Duke has taught me that patience and understanding is sometimes the easiest way to get the best result and has taught my son more things than I ever could have imagined. Duke has brought so much love into our family and is the text book HAPPY, good boy, family dog now. We thank the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando for the wonderful work they do and for making our family whole.
